Global LNG trade increased by 8.7% to 173.6mt in 2007. However, the year only saw the commitment to the construction of three new liquefaction trains - the rebuild of Algeria’s Skikda, Australia’s Pluto plant and Angola LNG. These trains will add 14mtpa of production capacity when they come on stream. The slow progress in projects reaching a final investment decision follows 2006 when only Peru LNG reached this stage. At the end of 2007, 95mtpa of new capacity was under construction to add to the 200mtpa in operation. As this capacity comes on stream over the next 4 years, it will provide new supplies for the many regasification terminals and ships that have come into operation in the last few years. The outlook for new supply beyond 2012 is much more uncertain and some of the ships and terminals may face low utilisation rates leaving markets without the LNG supplies that have been expected. This oneday master class will review the latest developments in the LNG business, including the prospects for liquefaction projects currently at the planning stage. The outlook for demand and prices in the main markets and the prospects for an increase in short-term trading will also be considered to give delegates an overview of the prospects for the global LNG business over the period to 2020.
